Many of these have beaches of coral sand – or pure white silica sand in the case of Whitehaven Beach – and are met by forests replete with exotic birdlife. Other wildlife includes dolphins, turtles, manta rays and multicoloured tropical fish. And in late winter through early spring, humpback whales breach the surface as they make their annual journey.
One of truly magical things about this stretch of coastline, apart from its sheer beauty, is the perfect balance of ‘green and blue’. Lush rainforests greeting the sea only adds to the timelessness of the Whitsundays. One day you could be cruising out on the bejewelled waters, the next you might be bushwalking within the mountainous Conway National Park enjoying the fabulous ocean and island views.
